  • 8 pounds bone-in beef shoulder Boston butt roast
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (canola, peanut, or avocado)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups Dr. Pepper
  • 3 cups barbecue sauce
  • 24 slider buns
  • Sliced pickles for serving

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef roast in a large skillet with oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side.
  2. Mix the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and salt in a bowl; rub this seasoning onto the roast.
  3. Transfer the seasoned beef to the slow cooker; brush any remaining seasoning from the skillet onto the meat.
  4. Pour Dr. Pepper around the roast in the slow cooker.
  5. Cook on low for 6-8 hours until the beef is tender.
  6. Shred the beef using two forks and mix with barbecue sauce; cook on high for an additional hour before serving.
