  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Steamed rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Press tofu to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1-inch cubes and coat with cornstarch.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and fry tofu until golden brown on all sides. Set aside.
  3. In the same pan, sauté ginger and onion until fragrant. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, and water; bring to a simmer.
  4. Dissolve remaining cornstarch in warm water and stir into the sauce, adding fried tofu back into the pan until thickened.
  5. Serve over steamed rice and garnish with optional scallions and sesame seeds.
